The Jaipur Literature Festival’s 2nd continued with a packed session on ‘The Gobal Novel’ featuring Man Booker shortlisted authors Jhumpa Lahiri and Jim Crace, as well as Maaza Mengiste and Xiaolu Guo.
“I am uncomfortable with the use of ‘global’ in the context of literature,” said Jhumpa Lahiri, who believes it is a “commercial term”.

 In the discussion on the relative merits of ‘global’ and ‘universal’ literature in other session Gloria Steinem says, “If you are not feminist in love, you fail to recognize someone who does not love you.” “Feminism makes love easier. Otherwise, there is the danger of feeling romantically drawn to someone who does not see you as an equal.” According to her a gender-equal society would be one where the word ‘gender’ does not exist, where everyone can be themselves.

“Literature was built by a world of misfits,” joked acclaimed American novelist Jonathan Franzen. The author was speaking to the crowd of Festival-goers as the second day of the world’s largest free literary festival kicked off.

Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Mark Mazzeti discussed his new book, The Way of the Knife, which analyzes the evolution of the CIA from a spy agency to a precise, covert killing machine. He observed “the war in Iraq under the Bush administration was a hammer, while the Obama administration handles it more like a scalpel”.

In a session titled ‘Chronicles of a Culture’, M.T. Vasudevan Nair, affectionately known as MT, was joined by his award-winning translator Gita Krishnankutty in a fascinating discussion about his novel Randamoozham, generally considered his masterpiece.

 In the evening the winner of the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2014 was announced. From a shortlist of 6, the winner of the US$50,000 award became Cyrus Mistry for her novel ‘Chronicle of a Corpse Bearer’.

  The following I prefer to tell in hindi, as the expressive mood of those sessions was so much hindi-like. Hope, you will not mind, but this is the way I reflected on these sessions.

  मुंबई बेस्ड राइटर जेरी पिंटो मीता कपूर के मॉडरेशन में ‘राइटिंग मेरी जान’ सेशन में बोल रहे थे , जयपुर कि सदी देखते हुए उन्होंने मज़ाक किया कि असली मुद्दा तो किताब बेचने का है वरना कौन इतनी सर्दी में साहित्य की बात करता है। पिंटो ने अपनी किताब, ‘एम एंड द बिग हूम’ के बारे में  बात कि जिसमे उन्होंने  अपनी मां की बीमारी से जुड़े अनुभव साझा किए हैं के बारे में बताते हुए कहा कि कैसे वे बॉलीवुड की प्रसिद्ध मां निरूपा रॉय को देखते हुए बड़े हुए।

ग्लोरिया स्टीनेम , इजराइल की जेरूया शालेव ,शैरिल स्ट्रेड ,समांथा शेनन अपने वजूद की तलाश में निकली आधी दुनिया  नयी कहानिया बना रही थी कही आंदोलन के अनूठे तरीके थे तो कही संघर्ष कि नयी दासता और इन सभे एक साथ मिलने से बन रही थी नयी कहानिया जो आज कि नारी में  नया जोश भर रही थी।

 नमिता गोखले जो इस फेस्टिवल कि डाइरेक्टर है और एक लेखिका है उन्होंने कहा कि  ब्राह्मण परिवार से हूं और मेरी शादी मराठी परिवार में हुई। हिंदुस्तान में शादी के बाद लड़की का नाम बदलकर उसकी पहचान छीन ली जाती है। अगर वो घरेलू है तो वह संस्कारी है। पहले यही सोच रहती थी लेकिन अब थोड़ा परिवर्तन है.  मेरी सबसे बड़ी चुनौती थी अपने मिडिल क्लास कंफर्ट को तोड़कर अपनी अलग पहचान बनाना। चेन्नई के मुस्लिम परिवार की सलमा का परिवार नहीं चाहता था कि वो लिखे, लेकिन बाथरूम में छिपकर कविताएं लिखती।

 सोढा गांव की सरपंच छवि राजावत ने कहा, युवा पीढ़ी को अपनी सभ्यता और संस्कृति पर गौरव करना होगा, वहीं हमें अपनी युवा पीढ़ी को अपनी सभ्यता और संस्कृति से जोडऩा होगा।

The Ska Vengers is a Delhi based band who blend ‘ska’ rhythms with elements of dub, punk, jazz and rap to come up with a form of music that is refreshingly different, energetic and highly danceable.They rocked the stage during the evening of the second day.

 Gods Robots, who also performed, is a global collaboration between Mumbai based vocalist Shrik and san Francisco based electronic music producer Janak Selekta .
