On Wednesday, it was announced that director Ivan Ayr’s debut feature Soni has been selected for the Horizons competition section at the Venice Film Festival, to be held from August 29 to September 8.
Ayr’s short films Lost and Found and Quest for a Different Outcome had won Best Film at the San Jose Short Film Festival. Exploring gender politics through the experiences of a Delhi policewoman, the film stars Geetika Vidya and Saloni Batra. The film was also selected for the Work in Progress Lab of India’s National Film Development Corporation’s Film Bazaar in 2017.
In the Venice film festival, there is a section called Horizons, “dedicated to films that represent the latest aesthetic and expressive trends in international cinema”, and Soni will be competing with 18 other films in this category.
Rahi Anil Barve’s Tumbad is another Indian film traveling to Venice and is set to open at the Critics’ Week, a parallel event to the Venice Film Festival.
