Phew! This month, we’ve got many wedding invitations, and this brings to us the wardrobe-confusion. Are you in the same boat? To help you out, we met Jaipur-based fashion designer, Swati Ubroi, at her store asking her season’s top styling tips!
JWB – But first, tell us what it is like to be a designer from a culturally rich city?
Swati – Everything about Jaipur is inspiring for an art lover – be it the fabric, colors, streets or seasons.
JWB – What has sparked your interest from this season’s runway?
Swati – The spring/summer 2015 runway was filled with melodrama from Indian history. You can see international runways indulging in lots of Indian motifs. Even my SS15 collection is about Rajasthan and its jali work.
JWB – And, what is that one X-factor from SS15 runway that women of Jaipur can bring in their party wardrobes?
Swati – Play with colors. D usty pink, old rose, peach, all of these are sure to provide you a sense of calmness.
…and if you like something bright; gemstone hues, sea green and other aqua colors will do the magic.
JWB – How can women add more zing to the plain saree look?
Swati – Women in chiffon sarees look beautiful but its sad that they mostly choose colors like white, yellow, blue and off-white. Why not experiment with more colors? Also, one can experiment with the blouse. Go for fitted gilets (jackets) style blouse, crop tops and even a long kurti worn over a saree!
JWB – This sounds interesting! What can the Jaipuri bride wear to make her style a head-turner?
Swati – A bridal wear in khadi! It is such a rewarding example.
JWB – Your model seems to be someone fierce. Describe her further.
Swati – A woman wearing my SS15 collection is someone who is hungry to explore the world and has a deep quest of traveling. She is just not limited to a city or a particular culture, she rather wears bits and pieces from every culture that defines her personality. She is unique and is not afraid to experiment.
…just like this style where I have combined a Rajasthan artwork inspired kurti with Persian gharara pants.
JWB – Can you suggest styles for various age groups? Let us begin for women in 20s and then proceed towards 40, 50 and 60+.
Swati – Women in the age group of 20-30 have a huge platform to experiment. Pair your lehenga with a quirky peplum (Kedia) blouse and doria dupatta.
For someone in her 40s, there is no flattery. She is draped in a stylish saree with a brooch. This says a lot about her changing taste and a quest for elegance.
For someone in her 50s, layering can give a break to her regular style. Floor length kurti, khadi, silk, Kota doria, georgette are definitely for her.
And finally for a woman who is in her 60s or above, I would say travel a lot and pick different styles!
JWB – In the end, give some advice for the new designers?
Swati – Pass your own uniqueness to your designs.
JWB – Thank you so much Swati for helping us look like a diva at parties!
Swati – I loved doing so!
Swati is one spontaneous fashion counselor and designer. Her nature is actually reflected in her designs.
