How many times do words fail you when it comes to explaining the storm you are battling inside you? Facing a similar situation, a 21-year-old creator from Mumbai, who goes by the pen-name Sandy, has created the comic ‘SandSerif’ which uses dark humor to deal with themes like depression, low self-esteem and the need for validation.
‘SandSerif’ started in June 2017 and for Sandy it’s a way of communicating with the world. Whenever a negative thought attacks him, he draws it out. “I enjoy being a character. I don’t want to attach a different name or face to it yet. The comics are basically projections of myself on paper. It’s all autobiographical,” he said.

Of late, he has teamed up with Threadless, an e-commerce website and an online community of artists to make money off his art. He now sells his comics merchandise like mugs, T-shirts, hoodies, pillow cases etc.

His work has been appreciated by many, with his audience growing day-by-day. “I’ve had people thank me for making them feel like they aren’t alone in feeling how they do. And, of course, I feel the same when I see those messages,” he said.

thoughts
“I don’t start a comic until I can completely visualize it in my head, punchline, and everything,” he added. “Art comes from a deeper place, as compared to talking; visuals can always convey more than just words.”
