If I asked you to define your type of porn, how would you do it? What are your preferences? You will be surprised to know that many men in our country shag to violent porn. Also, Punjab dominates the rubric of most watched child pornography.

Filmmaker Madhureeta Anand is creating a web-series that intends to fix this problem. Her non-fiction series will explore the aspect of our country’s high consumption of porn.

India is the 4th largest audience of the world of porn.

“The sheer proliferation is mind-boggling. Today, men and women in every village of the country can access porn if they have a smartphone. In most cases porn clips are circulated through Whatsapp and other messaging platforms,” Anand says.

“I talked to a lot of men about their sexuality. And most men and boys, even those barely out of school, talked about the way porn influenced their idea of sex. Some felt that they felt like raping women after watching rape porn,” Anand says.

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that men are more empowered to make informed choices in our country. Even if he is a carpenter watching sex clips on his mobile phone he is more likely to own the smartphone than his wife anyway,” Anand says.

“I want the Indian man, who is watching porn discreetly on his phone, to realize that what he might be watching might be illegal and unethical. I want him to have that realization, without anyone telling him so,” Anand says.

“I firmly believe that banning porn is not a solution. Porn addiction is like alcohol addiction. The onus is on the consumer to realize that what they are watching is screwing with their mind,” Anand says.
