Angelina, a special envoy for the United Nations’ refugee agency, on Friday has urged Myanmar to take quick judgments towards those who are legally caught committing sexual violence, in order to bring justice to victims.
She said, “This visit underlined the vulnerability of women and girls living in protracted conflict situations to sexual violence, trafficking, and other human rights violations. It was moving and humbling to meet survivors of sexual violence in Kachin State.”
She also focused her talks on the urgent need of medical assistance and legal & psychosocial support. The country is known for its severe human rights abuses including sexual violence and forced labour.
Country’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is working with Angelina as part of the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative, which promotes prosecutions of sexual violence perpetrators.
