Manu Gulati who had been heading Apple’s own chip developments for the last eight years joined Google a few weeks ago.
A veteran chip architect, Gulati announced this new association with Google through his Linkedin profile. He stated that he now works as Google’s Lead SoC Architect. His LinkedIn profile also mentions that prior to Google, he has worked with chip makers AMD and Broadcom for approximately 15 years making it a total of 27 years of experience.
While in Apple, Gulati was instrumental in Apple’s efforts to build custom chips for iPads, iPhones, and Apple TV. But having shifted to Google now, Gulati will help Google have an edge over other companies.
Apple that has a total of 15 chip-related patents, credits Gulati as one of the inventors. While some filings are specific to certain applications, others describe fundamental chip architecture.
One of the patents in Gulati’s name is of the hardware based security for Apple Pay that stores the user’s fingerprint on the iPhone. Well, after Gulati, Google is also interested in hiring few more chip experts for chip-design related positions that will “help define the architecture of future generations of phone and tablet.”
Apple began using its own chips in 2010 when they started by introducing the iPad in 2010, which was powered its A4 chip.
Up till today, Apple uses integrated microchips for every device which gives it the benefit to optimize processors and enhance performance while saving energy.
