Holi is absolutely a fun festival, loved by everyone, as we get to put so many colors on each other. And also not forgetting we get painted too! Amidst all this fun, we ignore one very important aspect – how much our hair and skin are damaged using the chemical colors (more on this later). Though using organic color is motivated, we bring you another way which can double your Holi celebration – making the Holi colors at home with family and friends!!
Ways to Make Dry Green –
- Dry the Gulmohar, spinach, coriander or mint leaves & grind them.
- Mix henna powder with equal quantity of flour (Maida).
- Use finely crushed powder of dried fenugreek (methi) or mint (pudina).
To Make Wet Green –
- Mix the paste of green leafy vegetables. Use few leaves of spinach (paalak), coriander (dhania), fenugreek (methi) or leaves of radish (mooli) in water.
- Boil spinach (paalak) or coriander (dhania) leaves in water.
Ways to Make Dry Red –
- Grind red Sandalwood into fine powder and use it directly. (Red sandalwood powder may be expensive and difficult to procure, so you may use herbal vermillion instead)
- Mix sun-dried and powdered extracts of hibiscus (gulmohar flower), marigold (genda), sunflower (surajmukhi), etc. To increase the bulks add any flour to it.
Ways to Make Wet Red-
- Boil 10-15 peels of Onions in ½ liter of water. Cool and use as a red color!
- Mix Lac dye with enough water to get the correct diluted effect as desired.
- Boil peels of red Pomegranate (anaar).
- For a bright orangish-red, mix thoroughly a pinch of lime powder (chuna -the one that we eat with our paan) with 2 spoons of turmeric powder (haldi) and a few drops of water. Use only after diluting with 10 liters of water.
Ways to Make Dry Yellow-
- Mix two teaspoons of haldi / Turmeric powder with double quantity of besan (gram flour). Haldi and besan are extremely healthy for our skin, and are also used widely as ubtan while taking bath.
- You can use the ordinary haldi or “kasturi” haldi which is very fragrant and has enhanced therapeutic effects. Besan can be substituted by atta, maida, rice flour, arra rot (ground nut) powder, fuller’s earth (multani mitti) and even talcum powder.
Ways to Make Wet Yellow–
- Add one teaspoon of haldi to two litres of water and stir well. This can be boiled to increase the concentration of colour and further diluted.
- Soak Amaltas (Cassia fistula) or Marigold / Gainda (Tagetus erecta) flowers in water. Boil and leave overnight.
Ways to Make Dry Blue –
- Dry and grind the Jacaranda flowers, which you can find in this season.
- Even the blue Hibiscus, found in Kerala, can be dried and powdered just like the red hibiscus.
Ways to Make Wet Blue –
- Crush the berries (fruits) of the Indigo plant and add to water for desired color strength. In some Indigo species the leaves when boiled in water yield a rich Blue.
Ways to Make Dry Black-
- Use the dry kajal (kohl) powder as black color.
Ways to Make Wet Black-
- Boil the dry Amla (Indian Gooseberry) in an iron vessel and leave overnight. Dilute with water and use.
- Extract juice of black grapes and mix water to remove stickiness.
Ways to Make Wet Brown-
- Kattha (Acacia catechu), the one eaten in paan, when mixed with water will give a brownish color.
- Boil Tea or Coffee leaves in water. Cool and use.
Ways to Make Dry Saffron –
- The dried Tesu or Palash flowers can be dried and powdered for a orange powder. Legend says that Lord Krishna used to play Holi with Tesu flowers, and the flowers also have a lot of medicinal properties. Tesu blooms during month of March.
Ways to Make Wet Saffron –
- Palash or Tesu flowers can be used for this. Soak these flowers overnight in water and then boil to get fragranced yellowish-orange colored water.
- Soak a few stalks of Saffron (Kesar) in 2 table spoons of water. Leave for few hours and grind to make a fine paste. Dilute with water for desired color strength. Though expensive, it is excellent for our skin.
Ways to Make Wet Magenta –
- Slice or grate one Beet root. Soak in 1 liter of water for a wonderful magenta. Boil or leave overnight for a deeper shade.
- Boil peels of 10 – 15 pink Onions in half liter of water for an orangish-pink colour. Remove the peels before using to remove the smell.
- Soak Kachnar (Bauhinia variegata) flowers (pink variety) in water overnight, or boil for a pinkish color.
DO YOU KNOW?
Purple color comes from chromium iodide, black from lead oxide. These chemicals, made from substances like industrial dyes are not only a health hazard but also contribute to significant amount of pollution of local water sources.
