We are proud of our Bollywood women force for coming forward and speaking about less-spoken issues in Indian society.
1st was Deepika Padukone who spoke about battling the depression, later yesteryear’s actress Rati Agnihotri revealed about bearing domestic violence for years, and now it is Poorna Jagannathan who is speaking about childhood sexual harassment.
In a recent video, the Delhi-Belly actress speaks about dealing with her alcoholic father, being sexually abused by a neighbor and a horrifying bus ride in Delhi. Here she talks about how breaking her own silence about gender-based violence through the play Nirbhaya allowed others to step forward and seek help. Her story shows how we can break the cycle of violence if we work together.
“My childhood was bit of a roller-coaster, it was a very privileged childhood, very fairy tale childhood, many aspects especially on paper. My father suffered from alcoholism. We were told to keep situation under the wraps as mush as possible. My first encounter with sexual violence was probably when I was 9. There was a neighbour and family friend who got his hands on me. He obviously told me not to tell anyone. I have encountered so many situation as a child and as a young adult. They were violent but I wouldn’t speak about it. There was a code that you wouldn’t talk about it.”
